This is not a review, but if it were to be one, I would say Nivea did well in including the talented Laura Wolvaardt in the NIVEA LUMINOUS630® “I Am #1” campaign.
The campaign, which also features other South African women from the entertainment and beauty industry, highlights their skin journeys and celebrates their confidence.
Laura Wolvaardt, in her segment, emphasizes the importance of sun protection and the need for effective ingredients to combat dark spots, especially for those exposed to the sun frequently like cricketers.
NIVEA LUMINOUS630® is a product range that is designed to visibly reduce dark marks and enhance skin luminosity.
“For years, South African women have been made to feel that clear, radiant skin is either unattainable or reserved for someone else. This campaign is our response,” says Odele Sheik, marketing at Nivea South Africa.
The objectives of this campaign are clear. The intentionality of it is nuanced, and I’d love to unpack that in a different blog. But for this blog, I really do think that Laura’s inclusion in the “I AM #1” campaign benefits women’s cricket by giving the sport more visibility, commercial value, and cultural relevance. It’s not just good marketing for NIVEA, it’s a small win for gender equity, sports development, and youth inspiration in South Africa.
And, while I’m aware of those moments here and there, where international brands in South Africa partner with our sports women, it’s not done as often as it should. If done consistently with other players and campaigns, this could be a game-changing moment for women’s cricket in the country.
