If this was a review, I would start off by saying this is very cheeky art, but this isnt yet a review so ill only talk about how the landscape of art is often reflective of the dreary human existence. We are, without any doubt, the worst species ever created.

This is a year already bursting at the seams with political drama, legal battles, and social media spats, Cape Town ceramicist Mervyn Gers has thrown a perfectly timed artistic grenade, into the fray. His latest work, “DUMP ON TRUMP,” is up for auction at Stephan Welz & Co. in Cape Town on June 17, and it’s more than just a cleverly titled sculpture, it’s a powerful piece of cultural commentary wrapped in Gers’s signature ceramic wit.

Taking shape in part of Gers’s broader “Dump on Dictators” series, this work takes aim at current U.S. president Donald Trump through a symbolic toilet. It’s brash. It’s perhaps humorous to some. But I’m very certain it’s deeply intentional. The toilet isn’t just a gag; it’s a metaphor for political waste, the desire to purge toxic leadership, and the very human need to take power down a notch.

Why this resonates now could be related to a bunch of reasons, mainly Trump is high up there in the headlines. The two billionaires are entangled in a social media spectacle, accusations of freeloading, ego-driven rants, and memes abound. Against this backdrop, Gers’s piece doesn’t just feel timely; it feels prophetic. What better time to auction a political toilet than when two titans of tech and populism are fighting for moral superiority on X (formerly Twitter)?

The Power of Satire in Art has always unsettled many, satirical art has long served as society’s pressure valve, allowing us to laugh, think, and protest, all at once. Gers uses the ceramic medium, traditionally seen as functional and decorative, to challenge power with subversive elegance. His toilets are not just toilets. They’re Trojan horses for complex ideas about governance, civil liberties, and societal decay.

In a South African Perspective I am wonder off at length in that front. While the piece targets Trump, the series itself was born out of South Africa’s own experience with authoritarianism and civic frustration, especially during harsh lockdown measures. Gers’s satire crosses borders, reminding us that bad governance is not uniquely American. The symbolism is global, the execution local, and the message unmistakable.

Mervyn Gers’s “DUMP ON TRUMP” isn’t just a political jab. It’s an artistic statement, a collector’s item for the rich and affluent, and a visual reminder that in chaotic times, humor and critique are powerful tools.
