In celebration of Youth Month, 5FM has launched a heartfelt CSI initiative designed to tackle food insecurity and empower young children. The ‘5FM Lunchbox Drive’, in partnership with Rise Against Hunger Africa, aimed to pack a whopping 50,000 meals for Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres across Johannesburg.
The event took place on Thursday, 12 June, from 10:00 to 16:00 at the SABC Auckland Park foyer, and it was open to everyone, from everyday listeners to businesses and high-profile personalities.
Why it matters:
This drive is not just about meals, it’s about making an impact during the most critical phase of a child’s life. Well-nourished children are better equipped to learn, grow, and thrive. By contributing your time, voice, or resources, you’ll be part of a tangible shift toward better futures.

A call to action:
“In a country as vibrant and resourceful as ours, no child should go hungry,” says Masi Mdingane, Business Manager for 5FM and Good Hope FM. “The ‘5FM Lunchbox Drive’ is about more than meals , it’s about momentum. When the youth rise, the nation shifts into a higher gear.”
Get involved:
To all those who showed up. Packed a few lunchboxes, we applaud you. For those who couldn’t show up physically, use your platform. Invite your teams to do the same. Whether you’re a socially conscious brand or an individual with a heart for change, this is a chance to put purpose into practice.
Key Dates to Note:
- Lunchbox Packing Day: Started Thursday, 12 June 2025
- Meal Delivery to ECD Centres: Tuesday, 17 June 2025
Though I am concered that there is a couple of days between the meal preparation and meal delivery, it’s a good initiative i hope that it does look into the timelines…
