In the heart of Johannesburg, a young designer armed with little more than ambition, storytelling, and a backpack of jeans set out to redefine South African fashion. That designer is Tshepo Mohlala, the founder of TSHEPO Jeans, a premium denim brand that has grown from a modest beginning into one of the country’s most celebrated fashion houses.

Mohlala’s story is rooted in resilience and heritage. Raised in Tsakane township, he often credits the women in his family, his grandmother, mother, and aunt for instilling in him values of hard work, faith, and courage. These influences shaped not only the man but also the brand that would later carry his name. In 2015, with just R8,000 and 100 pairs of jeans, Mohlala launched TSHEPO, knocking on doors and selling his product directly from his backpack. What began as a passion project has since evolved into a globally recognised South African label, praised for its authenticity, craftsmanship, and storytelling.

At the core of TSHEPO is denim, but not denim as fast fashion. Each piece is built on the promise of longevity and meaning. The brand’s signature Presidential Slim Fit jeans embody sleek design, precision tailoring, and high-quality fabric, including Zimbabwean cotton and sustainable fibers. Finished with the brand’s crown embroidery, every garment is a nod to empowerment and pride, encouraging wearers to feel like royalty in their own right.

Crafting work

From its beginnings as a men’s label, TSHEPO has expanded into womenswear, accessories, and collaborations that push the boundaries of African fashion identity. Collections like Tshepo Womxn and limited-edition capsules such as Pakisha and Burning Star showcase not just style but storytelling, drawing from history, culture, and contemporary African expression.

The world has taken notice. From local fashion enthusiasts to international celebrities, including Meghan Markle, who wore the brand during her South African tour, TSHEPO Jeans has proven that African luxury can hold its own on the global stage. The brand’s features in publications like Vogue, and partnerships such as its 2024 collaboration with Sappi to introduce sustainable lyocell denim, reflect its vision of combining craftsmanship with responsibility.

Beyond the denim itself, TSHEPO represents something larger: the spirit of South African entrepreneurship. In an industry often dominated by global labels, Mohlala’s brand is a reminder of what local design and business can achieve when rooted in authenticity, community, and vision. It is a success story that inspires other small businesses and creatives, showing that local ownership can lead to global recognition.

Today, TSHEPO stands as a fashion brand and as a cultural symbol, proof that South African-owned businesses can craft legacies that are both stylish and significant. Every crown-stitched pair of jeans tells a story: of heritage, resilience, and a future where African fashion claims its rightful place on the world stage.
