Veteran journalist and media executive, John Bailey has officially taken ownership of two of South Africa’s most recognised Sunday newspapers, the Sunday World and Sunday Sun,  marking the beginning of what he calls a “fresh chapter” for the publications and the broader media landscape.

Bailey, a respected figure with over three decades of experience in South African and international newsrooms, has long been regarded as a stalwart of responsible journalism and editorial excellence. His career spans leadership roles at major broadcasters such as eNCA and the SABC, where he served in senior editorial capacities and earned a reputation for integrity, balance, and innovation in storytelling.

As former Managing Editor at eNCA, Bailey also spent time abroad as the channel’s Bureau Chief in China, deepening his understanding of global media practices and the fast-evolving information economy. His extensive background, coupled with a Master’s degree in Journalism, reflects a lifelong dedication to advancing credible and inclusive journalism in South Africa.

His announced acquisition of Sunday World and Sunday Sun this month may signal a strategic business move that reaffirms Bailey’s belief in the enduring power of print media to inform, inspire, and influence. Speaking about his vision, Bailey noted that his goal is to build on the legacy of these titles while sharpening their editorial focus and competitiveness in an increasingly digital media landscape.

“This is about revitalising trusted platforms,” he said. “We want to reconnect with readers, strengthen journalistic independence, and remind audiences that Sunday reading still matters in shaping public conversation.”

Both newspapers, known for their mix of entertainment, lifestyle, and investigative journalism, have long been staples in South African households. Under Bailey’s ownership, industry observers anticipate renewed energy in editorial leadership, deeper community engagement, and a modern approach to content delivery that bridges print and digital audiences.

Bailey’s entry into ownership places him among a small circle of South African media leaders transitioning from newsroom veterans to proprietors, a move that underscores his commitment to sustainability and transformation in the country’s media sector.

As the South African media industry continues to adapt to shifting audience behaviours and advertising realities, John Bailey’s leadership and background promises a blend of experience, integrity, and innovation, qualities that could well define the next chapter of Sunday World and Sunday Sun
