South African media powerhouse Claire Mawisa has officially joined BBC Africa Eye as a reporter, a move that further cements her place among the continent’s most trusted storytellers.
Her debut investigative documentary, Shadow Healers: South Africa’s Psychedelic Journey, is already streaming on the BBC Africa Eye platform. The film delves into South Africa’s growing interest in psychedelics and spiritual healing, marking yet another milestone in Mawisa’s long career of fearless and thought-provoking journalism.
BBC Africa Eye, the investigative arm of BBC World Service, is known for spotlighting pressing political, cultural, and social issues across the continent. Its work often brings overlooked stories to the surface with a focus on accountability, depth, and a distinctly African perspective. Claire’s appointment strengthens that mission, introducing her unique voice and insight to a global audience.
With close to three decades in broadcasting, Claire Mawisa’s name has become synonymous with integrity and impact. For over ten years, she’s been a familiar face on Carte Blanche, where her investigative pieces have exposed corruption, amplified community struggles, and illuminated South Africa’s environmental concerns. Her transition to BBC Africa Eye signals a career evolution and a widening of scope, from national conversations to global storytelling about Africa and its people.
Beyond her on-screen work, Claire’s commitment to social advocacy runs deep. She serves on the boards of Ibis Reproductive Health, RX Radio, a youth-led station, and the WWF South Africa, where her efforts contribute to human rights, media empowerment, and environmental conservation. Through her organisation Luminosity Lab, she has reached over 100,000 women across the country through workshops that foster self-discipline, clarity, and purpose.
Known for her calm confidence and eloquence both on stage and behind the mic, Claire continues to inspire through public speaking engagements and her work as a facilitator and mentor.
Reflecting on her new role, she shares:
“This new chapter with BBC Africa Eye is a responsibility I’m honoured to have. I’m committed to telling stories that bring meaningful change and shift perceptions about Africa on a global stage.”
Claire Mawisa’s voice continues to remind us of the power of storytelling and how, in the right hands, it can illuminate truths that move societies forward.
