Fundi has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a capable, accountable and citizen-centred local government sector through its strategic partnership with the Institute for Municipal Practitioners of South Africa (IMPSA) at the 2025 Local Government Indaba.
Hosted at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, the Indaba brought together more than 1,500 stakeholders, including national and local government leaders, traditional authorities, civil society organisations, academia and private sector partners. The gathering addressed urgent challenges facing South Africa’s 247 municipalities, ranging from service delivery failures and weak governance to financial instability and infrastructure backlogs.
Mary Maponya, Fundi’s Executive Head: Lending, underscored the urgency of collaboration to rebuild municipal capacity.
“Local government is where service delivery becomes real for citizens,” she said. “When municipalities struggle, communities suffer. Fundi is committed to partnering with institutions like IMPSA to strengthen systems, improve administration and support better outcomes for households and businesses.”

Fundi was one of four strategic partners participating in the Indaba, contributing expertise in financial solutions, governance support, digital tools and administrative management. The event featured keynote remarks from Minister Velenkhosi Hlabisa speaking on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, and high-level panel dialogues on ethical leadership, professionalisation, oversight, and rebuilding public trust.
A central feature of the Indaba was the Local Government Good Governance Awards, celebrating municipalities that demonstrate excellence in transparency, service delivery and sound administration.
“These success stories prove that transformation is possible,” Maponya said. “We are inspired by municipalities that are doing the work, and we remain committed to supporting the broader ecosystem to achieve similar progress.”
Maponya emphasised that sustainable municipal renewal requires collective effort:
“No single institution can fix local government in isolation. Real transformation demands partnership between government, business, civil society and specialised organisations such as IMPSA. Fundi is proud to stand alongside IMPSA in driving this mission forward.”
As South Africans continue to call for strengthened service delivery and improved municipal performance, Fundi’s partnership with IMPSA at the 2025 Local Government Indaba represents a meaningful step toward responsive, professional and future-ready local governance.
