Each year, the Mscsports Sports Quiz sets out to remind us that sport is far more than scores, stats, or bragging rights. It is a thread that stitches together communities, fuels generosity, and turns shared passion into meaningful impact. The 2025 edition of this much-loved event did exactly that, raising over R750 000 for charities across South Africa, a milestone that speaks to the heart and intention behind the gathering.
A significant portion of the funds R180 000, was handed over to Hot Cares at the annual Hot Cares Teddython on Thursday, 30 October. The moment served as a fitting finale to a night built on camaraderie and compassion, and a reminder of how sport continues to create space for generosity at scale.
Hosted at The Venue at The Houghton Hotel, and powered by the support of Bidvest Services International and RAM Hand-to-Hand Couriers, the event once again brought together sports icons, corporate teams, and fans for an evening where competition and community existed in perfect balance. According to Mscsports, this year’s record-breaking turnout underscored just how deeply the event resonates within South Africa’s sporting and corporate circles.
A highlight of the night was the live auction, always a showstopper, which featured exclusive memorabilia: a Springbok RWC 2023 signed jersey, a Proteas 2025 Test jersey, and an Open Championship flag signed by 40 former winners. Bidders rose to the occasion with remarkable generosity, with the top item selling for R120 000, helping elevate the event to one of its strongest fundraising totals yet.
For Barney Girnun, Founder of Mscsports, the event’s success is rooted in its purpose. “The Sports Quiz is about more than competition, it’s about connection. Each year we see how sport can unite people and create real impact,” he reflects. “Handing over more than R750 000 this year is a proud moment for everyone involved.”
Competition still had its moment in the spotlight, though. Bidvest Services International, captained by CEO Alan Fainman, clinched the 2025 victory after a tightly contested battle of sporting knowledge. The room was also energised by the presence of local sports heroes, including Victor Matfield, and Siphiwe Tshabalala to name a few
The spirit of the evening echoed through the voices of participants. “Lots of sports questions, lots of laughter, and all for a good cause,” shared Simon Parkinson from Hot 102.7 Breakfast. Proteas cricketer Lungi Ngidi echoed the sentiment, calling the event “a great cause” and expressing hope for its continued growth.
As planning for the 2026 edition gets underway, one thing is clear: when sport and purpose come together, the outcome is consistently powerful. The Mscsports Sports Quiz stands as proof that shared joy can spark collective impact and that generosity, like sport, has a way of bringing people together year after year.
