On the eve of South Africa’s 2026 State of the Nation Address, Investec introduced Invest-ED, a national programme aimed at supporting Grade 8 to 12 learners and their parents or guardians with structured guidance on subject choices, skills development and career pathways.
The launch coincided with renewed national focus on education and youth employment.

In his address, President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed government’s emphasis on strengthening education outcomes, expanding youth employment pathways and advancing what he termed a “skills revolution.” He referenced more than 2.5 million opportunities created through the Presidential Employment Stimulus, largely benefiting young people and women, as well as an 88% matric pass rate in 2025, the highest recorded to date.

Invest-ED positions itself within this broader context. According to Investec, the programme is designed to help families better understand the relationship between education choices, evolving industries, and work readiness in a changing economy. The focus is on equipping learners with practical insight into emerging career paths, entrepreneurship, and the skills expected to shape future workplaces.

The pilot live-streamed event was broadcast on 11 February from Stark Studios in Randburg and reached more than 4 000 learners, along with parents and educators across South Africa. Participating schools hosted group viewings, while families were able to register and attend online. Investec has indicated plans to expand the programme’s reach to additional schools over time.

Speakers at the inaugural session included international behavioural scientist Mike Hughes, quantum education leader Elisa Torres Durney, and medical specialists Dr Simon Fraser and Dr Angelo Apostoleris. Discussions covered decision-making in an AI-influenced workplace, developments in technology-driven career pathways and how established professions are adapting to industry shifts.

Invest-ED brings together local and international contributors, industry practitioners and education specialists to provide accessible guidance for both learners and parents. In addition to live sessions, programme content will be made available through Investec’s website to support continued engagement and learning.

Through this initiative, Investec aims to contribute to more informed subject selection, increased awareness of future skills, and stronger preparation for participation in South Africa’s evolving economy
