The Market Theatre Foundation has announced the appointment of Rethabile Molatela Mothobi as The Market Theatre’s new Producer, effective 26 January 2026, a significant addition as the iconic institution steps into its landmark 50th anniversary year.
Rethabile holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts from University of the Witwatersrand, where she majored in Performance, Directing and Performance Arts Management. Her career reflects a dynamic blend of artistic vision and operational excellence, having worked across the creative sector as a producer, artistic director and project lead.

An accomplished storyteller and high-performance producer, Rethabile brings notable experience in film and television, with credits including The Estate, Black Is King, Vaya, and Courting Anathi. Her return to live theatre signals a full-circle moment one that feels especially resonant as The Market Theatre celebrates five decades of fearless, politically conscious storytelling.
She steps into the role following the untimely passing of former producer Zodwa Shongwe, during a period that calls for both continuity and renewed creative momentum. Rethabile’s proven strength in managing innovative projects, from budgeting and administration to reporting and compliance, positions her to fortify the theatre’s operational framework while supporting its ambitious artistic programming.
Beyond production, her work as a drama facilitator in high schools and community spaces speaks directly to the Foundation’s commitment to cultivating emerging voices and expanding access to the performing arts.
“I’m overjoyed to have joined The Market Theatre Foundation,” says Rethabile. “My personal motto is ‘knowledge in the service of Africa.’ Being part of an organisation that actively contributes to cultural discourse across our country and continent is both a privilege and a pleasure. This season is about creating more stories, deepening representation and building meaningful partnerships.”

Artistic Director Greg Homann describes her appointment as a timely boost to the artistic department as the theatre launches its year-long 50th anniversary programme. “Our programming reflects both our history as a landmark of resistance and our vision for the future. At its core is shared ownership, belonging and creating opportunities for creatives. This is an exciting moment to welcome Rethabile to The Market Theatre Foundation.”

As The Market Theatre enters its golden milestone, Rethabile’s appointment feels both strategic and symbolic, a commitment to excellence, continuity, and the next chapter of South African theatre.
