Adrian “Adi” Birrell appointed Strategic High Performance Consultant at Lions Cricket

Johannesburg-based franchise DP World Lions has moved to deepen its high-performance structures with the appointment of Adrian Victor Birrell as Strategic High Performance Coaching Consultant, effective 1 May 2026.

The announcement positions Birrell as a key strategic addition to the Lions ecosystem for a minimum two-year term, reinforcing the franchise’s ambition to sustain its reputation as one of the most progressive cricket organisations in South Africa. Branded proudly as The Pride of Jozi, the Lions have framed the appointment as another step in strengthening the technical backbone of the team as it continues to compete at the top end of the domestic and franchise game.

Birrell arrives in Johannesburg with a coaching résumé that spans continents and cricket cultures. Born in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape, he first entered the professional game as a provincial cricketer for Eastern Province in the 1980s and 1990s. A right-handed batter who also bowled leg-spin, Birrell played 45 first-class matches before transitioning into coaching, a shift that would ultimately define his career. While his playing days were solid rather than spectacular, the experience gave him a deep understanding of domestic cricket structures, an insight that would later shape his reputation as a development-focused coach, capable of building competitive systems rather than simply managing star players.

It was on the international stage that Birrell’s coaching reputation truly emerged. In 2002 he was appointed head coach of the Ireland national cricket team, then still regarded as an emerging force in global cricket. His tenure culminated in one of the most memorable moments of the 2007 Cricket World Cup when Ireland stunned the cricket world by defeating the Pakistan national cricket team and progressing to the Super Eight stage. The campaign transformed perceptions of Irish cricket and elevated Birrell’s standing as a tactician capable of organising teams to punch well above their weight on the biggest stage.

Following that breakthrough, Birrell’s expertise was sought across multiple cricket systems. He worked within England’s youth development structures before returning to South Africa to join the coaching staff of the South Africa national cricket team as assistant coach under Russell Domingo. During this period the Proteas remained one of the strongest Test sides in the world, and Birrell played a role in shaping the team’s preparation and performance culture at a time when South African cricket was navigating both high expectations and structural transitions.

In recent years his influence has been most visible in franchise and county cricket. Birrell served as head coach of Hampshire County Cricket Club from 2019 to 2025, guiding the historic English county through an increasingly competitive domestic landscape while balancing the demands of multi-format cricket. At the same time, his work in South Africa’s modern franchise era has been equally notable. Teams under his leadership in the SA20 environment have reached multiple finals and lifted three titles from four appearances, a record that underscores his reputation as a coach who understands how to build winning environments in the high-pressure ecosystem of modern T20 cricket.

Against that backdrop, the Lions’ decision to bring Birrell into a strategic consulting role reflects more than a simple coaching appointment. It signals an intention to strengthen the franchise’s performance architecture, from elite player preparation to broader cricketing philosophy. The Lions have spent the past few seasons positioning themselves as one of the country’s leading cricket organisations, and Birrell’s arrival adds international experience and technical credibility to a structure already focused on building and sustaining excellence.

For Birrell, the move represents a return to working closely within the South African domestic system, albeit now in a role designed to influence performance at a strategic level. For the Lions, it is the acquisition of a seasoned cricket mind whose career has repeatedly intersected with pivotal moments in the modern game. As the franchise continues to build on its identity as The Pride of Jozi, the partnership suggests a clear intention to ensure that the next phase of Lions cricket is guided not only by ambition, but by one of the sport’s most experienced high-performance architects.
