Growthpoint Properties has partnered with blockchain-based platform Fuel Switch to launch its e-co2 green energy initiative, going live in October 2025. The programme will deliver certified renewable electricity, initially hydropower wheeled from Lesotho Highlands to ten Sandton office buildings, making Growthpoint the first in South Africa to offer certified, building-level renewable electricity to tenants.
The innovation lies in how the energy is certified, tracked and monetised. Using IoT, blockchain and AI, Fuel Switch issues Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) directly to tenants via digital wallets. Each REC confirms one megawatt-hour of renewable energy fed into the grid and can be redeemed to reduce Scope 2 carbon emissions or sold for revenue.
This approach simplifies access to the voluntary REC market, previously limited to large players, and allows Growthpoint tenants from small to large businesses to meet ESG and net-zero commitments while saving costs.
Growthpoint signed a 195GWh Power Purchase Agreement with Etana Energy in 2023 to secure hydro, wind and solar supply. The blockchain platform ensures transparency, auditability and near-instant trading, aligned with global sustainability reporting standards.
Both companies see the partnership as a game-changer: democratising access to the green economy, supporting energy security, and opening new revenue opportunities for businesses across South Africa.
