Across the continent, initiatives like the African Fashion & Arts Award (AFAA) have begun shaping new pathways for recognition in the creative economy. Established in 2021 and headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria, AFAA was designed to celebrate African excellence in design, art, and entrepreneurship, spotlighting individuals who transform creativity into community impact. Its ceremonies and showcases, which have taken place in cities like Cape Town and Abuja, have become an important cultural intersection for emerging and established talent alike.

This year, South Africa’s creative scene has reason to celebrate. Nonka Mbonambi, Managing Director of Creative Nestling, has earned not one but two nominations at the upcoming AFAA 2025 in Nigeria:

As an artist, curator, and community leader, Nonka’s work stretches far beyond the gallery wall. She has painted public murals that reimagine women’s narratives, organized platforms for young creatives to access mentorship and resources, and led Creative Nestling’s mission to empower Africa’s next generation of thinkers and makers.

In many ways, her double nomination reflects what the AFAA itself claims to champion, the rise of African creativity as both cultural power and economic force. From Lagos to Cape Town, these awards are recognition and a re-centering of how we value artistry, storytelling, and leadership across the continent.

Let’s bring both awards home. Every vote counts.
