Nestlé has expanded its recall of certain infant formula products globally, including South Africa, after a potential contamination was identified in specific batches. The affected brands include SMA, BEBA, NAN, and Alfamino. While no illnesses have been confirmed, the recall is a precautionary measure linked to possible contamination with cereulide, a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting.

In South Africa, the National Consumer Commission confirmed that the recalled NAN infant formula was produced in June 2025 and has an estimated shelf life of 18 months. Some of the affected products were also exported to Namibia and Eswatini.

Nestlé says the issue originates from a supplier ingredient, not the finished products themselves, and that it is testing, replacing suppliers, and increasing production to ensure safe supply going forward.

What you should do:

  • Check the batch number and production date on any Nestlé infant formula you have.
  • Do not use affected products.
  • Follow guidance from retailers or Nestlé on returns or refunds.
  • If you have concerns, contact your healthcare provider or local consumer authority.

This recall spans over 37 countries and is described by regulators as preventative, prioritising infant safety above all else.
