We love a “first” of anything appointment at corporate, this announcement is more significant as it speaks to the drive South African women have in Corporate, business and quite empowerment. Philip Morris International (PMI) has taken a bold step as they announced the appointment of Buena Barnes as its new general manager for South Africa, making her the first woman to lead the company in this capacity.

Formerly the company’s Financial Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Barnes brings deep financial acumen, local market insight, and experience leading transformation in highly regulated industries. Her career, spanning senior roles at GlaxoSmithKline South Africa and British American Tobacco South Africa, speaks to adaptability and leadership built on substance rather than symbolism.

Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment as Philip Morris continues its transition towards a smoke-free future, driven by science, innovation, and sustainability. Barnes has been a key advocate for this shift, supporting investment in scientifically substantiated alternatives and reinforcing the role responsible leadership can play in public health outcomes.

Beyond the boardroom, Barnes’ leadership carries wider significance. Representation at executive level matters, particularly for young girls who rarely see themselves reflected in corporate power. When women lead at this level, they help reshape ambition, influence education pathways, and normalise the idea that leadership is not gendered, but earned.

Buena Barnes’ journey is both a celebration and a signal of what’s possible when women are trusted to lead, and a reminder that the future of business, and education, is stronger when women help shape it.
