African brand strategist and public intellectual Thebe Ikalafeng has been appointed Chancellor of Sol Plaatje University for a five-year term, effective 16 January 2026.

He succeeds Justice Steven Majiedt.
A Kimberley native, Ikalafeng is internationally recognised for his work at the intersection of branding, culture and governance. He is the founder of Brand Leadership Group and Brand Africa, and the driving force behind the Brand Africa 100 study. His appointment is seen as both a homecoming and a strategic boost for the University’s ambition to deepen its regional impact while strengthening its national and global standing.
Ikalafeng, who has most recently served on the University Council, describes his new role as one of stewardship, supporting Sol Plaatje University’s mission to advance African thought leadership rooted in community, dignity and global relevance.
