Virgin Active South Africa has announced a multi-year partnership with global fitness race HYROX, positioning all 128 Virgin Active clubs nationwide as official HYROX-affiliated training clubs.
The collaboration integrates the fast-growing indoor fitness race format into Virgin Active’s national club network, strengthening South Africa’s role in HYROX’s global expansion strategy.

Founded in Germany in 2017, HYROX is a standardised indoor fitness race that combines functional training and endurance, allowing participants of varying fitness levels to compete within the same race structure worldwide. The format has scaled rapidly, with more than 90 events hosted annually across 34 countries and over 300,000 participants each year. Globally, HYROX works with close to 9,000 affiliated training clubs and has set its sights on doubling that number in the coming years. South Africa has emerged as one of HYROX’s fastest-growing markets. Since the inaugural local event in September 2024, both participation and spectator numbers have more than doubled, with events expanding from single-day formats to full weekend experiences.
The next milestone will see the country host its first-ever three-day HYROX event in Cape Town this April. “HYROX aligns strongly with how we think about exercise today,” says Virgin Active Group CEO Dean Kowarski. “Members set a goal, train with intent, become part of a community, participate in an event, recover properly and then repeat that cycle. It’s not only for elite athletes, the format is inclusive and accessible across fitness levels.” Kowarski adds that the partnership fits naturally with Virgin Active’s existing training ecosystem, making it easier for clubs and personal trainers to design HYROX-focused programmes at scale. “HYROX is a social goal-based event, not a once-off race, and Virgin Active is uniquely positioned to support every stage of that journey.”
HYROX South Africa Managing Director Mlondi Mashinini says the partnership reflects shared values around community and participation. “HYROX has grown globally because of a committed community that loves to train and compete together. Virgin Active shares that DNA. As our official training and exercise partner, they’ll help more people train better, race stronger and feel connected to the sport as it continues to grow across South Africa.”

The partnership will be supported across Virgin Active’s club environments through structured strength and conditioning programmes aligned to HYROX movement standards, access to functional training spaces and equipment, and recovery-focused facilities including stretching, mobility and recovery-led programming. Coaching education will also be rolled out nationally to ensure consistent standards and safe progression across clubs.
Virgin Active will play an active role in the upcoming three-day HYROX Cape Town event, supporting athlete preparation, in-club and on-site recovery, and community engagement. Club members will benefit from exclusive advantages, including HYROX-aligned training pathways, access to accredited coaches, priority race entry opportunities, express lanes, simulation events, fitness testing and dedicated community support at race venues. HYROX-inspired training environments and programmes will be progressively introduced across Virgin Active clubs.
Strategically, the collaboration represents a growth lever for both organisations. Virgin Active South Africa forms part of a global network of more than 230 clubs across nine countries, giving HYROX access to a large and engaged fitness community, while providing Virgin Active with a performance-led platform to drive member engagement, retention and personal training demand

“We want to meet members where they are and give them something meaningful to train towards,” says Kowarski. “Whether it’s a first-time participant or a seasoned competitor, the focus remains on consistency, progression, enjoyment and proper recovery.”
Over the next two years, Virgin Active and HYROX plan to roll out integrated training programmes, experiences and content, with the longer-term goal of affiliating Virgin Active clubs globally and establishing a scalable blueprint for future performance-led partnerships
