Effie South Africa has officially opened the call for entries for the 2026 SA Effie Awards, and with it comes a familiar but necessary challenge to the industry: to prove, not just promise, that your work works. Globally recognised as the benchmark for marketing effectiveness, the Effies occupy a particular space in the awards ecosystem. This is not about clever lines, striking visuals, or cultural buzz alone, it is very much about the harder, less glamorous work of showing how insight, strategy, execution and evidence come together to shift behaviour, solve business problems, and deliver measurable impact in the real market.

As Gillian Rightford, ACA executive director for Effie South Africa, puts it: “Effie is where effectiveness is defined, tested and celebrated.” An Effie case is not simply a narrative of creative excellence, it is showmanship and a disciplined argument for results. The industry is increasingly asked to justify budgets, relevance, and return, this is a distinction that matters. For agencies, brands, and client-partner teams operating in South Africa, the 2026 programme presents an opportunity not just to win trophies, but to document, benchmark and defend the value of the work being produced locally. This is especially significant in a climate where marketing is often reduced to visibility metrics, rather than long-term commercial or behavioural outcomes.

Campaigns are eligible if they flighted in South Africa between 1 February 2025 and 31 January 2026. For those considering the Sustained Success category, work must have been in market between 1 February 2023 and 31 January 2026, allowing teams to demonstrate consistency and long-term impact over time.
Importantly, this also opens the door for leaders, strategists and marketers to nominate work, and teams, that may not always put themselves forward, but whose results speak loudly. If you’re in a position to encourage a partner, client or internal team to enter, this is the moment to do so.

Dates the industry should be watching, Effie South Africa has laid out clear timelines for the 2026 cycle:

  • How to Write a Winning Effie Entry (online workshop): Thursday, 5 March 2026
  • Early Bird entries: 1 April – 30 April 2026
  • On-Time entries: 1 May – 14 May 2026
  • Last Minute entries: 15 May – 29 May 20

Entries close strictly at midnight on Thursday, 29 May 2026, via the official Effie Awards South Africa online entry portal. As always, teams are encouraged to take advantage of the Early Bird window, not just for cost reasons, but to allow sufficient time for rigorous case development.
To support this process, Effie South Africa will host its annual “How to Write a Winning Effie Entry” online workshop on 5 March 2026, aimed at helping teams sharpen their thinking, structure their evidence, and avoid common pitfalls in submission.

Effie recognition doesn’t end at national borders. Finalists and winners contribute points to the Global Effie Index, positioning South African agencies, brands and marketers within an international effectiveness ranking. Gold winners progress further to Effie’s Global Best of the Best, where local work is benchmarked against the most effective campaigns worldwide.
With under-represention being a major problem in global conversations, this visibility becomes increasingly important, not just for reputation but for talent, confidence, and investment in South African creativity that delivers results.

For those needing a reminder of the bar set by previous entrants, the 2025 Effie SA Magazine offers a useful reference point on the calibre of thinking, measurement, and impact expected. If you work in marketing, strategy, media or brand leadership, and you believe effectiveness should still be the standard, this is your cue. Enter. Nominate. Encourage. Document the work that moved the needle.
