The Western Cape Government has committed R15 million toward infrastructure upgrades at World Sports Betting (WSB) Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town and Boland Park in Paarl, as preparations begin to take shape for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

On Thursday, 2 April 2026, the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport formalised this commitment through Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs) signed with the Western Province Cricket Association and Boland Cricket. The agreements secure funding for key infrastructure improvements at both venues, which are set to host matches during the tournament.

Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, positioned the investment as both strategic and proven. He noted the province’s track record in hosting global sporting events and emphasised the broader economic impact, highlighting the role such tournaments play in driving investment and supporting job creation.

From the administrative side, Corrie van Zyl, CEO of the Western Province Cricket Association, welcomed the funding, stating that it ensures WSB Newlands Cricket Ground will meet international standards required for a tournament of this scale. WPCA President Johannes Adams echoed this sentiment, underscoring the importance of collaboration between government and sporting bodies in delivering successful global events and sustaining long-term benefits for the game in the province.

Boland Cricket similarly acknowledged the significance of the investment, particularly the development of a purpose-built player and match officials’ facility at Boland Park. The organisation described the upgrade as a long-term asset that will extend beyond the tournament, contributing to improved infrastructure for future athletes, officials, and the broader cricketing community.

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is scheduled to take place across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November 2027, with the Western Cape set to play a key hosting role.
